Tom Phillips Says: TAKE A TIP FROM CHESS KING BOBBY
Meet the teenager with a lesson for Britain's too timid sportsmen.
BOBBY FISCHER, not 18 until next month, is one of the world's most remarkable men in sport. His line—chess.
And he is so good that the day may not be far off when his native America wrests the world title from the Russians.
Fischer is so remarkable that he has won the United States chess championship for four years. Already he has had the honour of being awarded the title of Master of Chess by the Russians.
He must be a really astonishing lad because the youth of America is plunging seriously into this tough, mental game with a zest that one would never expect.
Bobby's success secret? To give the customers fun and games by attacking.

ALL OUT
He goes all-out to win. He scorns the defensive strategies played by many of the Russian masters and describes such gambits as cowardly.
The brashness of youth apart, he has proved his point. Repeatedly he has had his onlooking admirers frantic with despair in vital games when he was hopelessly licked.
Then, with a daring, inspired master-move, he has turned defeat into victory, leaving his bewildered opponents no option but to resign and go home to spend sleepless nights wondering what hit them and how Bobby Fischer did it.

ATTACK NOW!
There is a lesson for authorities in all British sports which are slumping sadly at the box office.
Attack! Go all out to win!
Ace-bowler Jim Laker has flayed the top cricket people who are responsible for dull, boring Tests because of defensive tactics.
The Rugger people are seeking to change the laws to brighten up the game.
Soccer is only drawing the crowds where the teams are playing fast, win-or-bust matches.
Attack, attack, attack! With blinding skill, of course, like Bobby Fischer does.
I remember that great snooker playing Joe Davis telling me: “Tom, I will never become a defensive player. I'd rather attack and lose than defend and win.
“Before I'd become a defensive player I'd break my favourite cue. The crowds pay for entertainment, not boredom.
“So, as long as I play, I'll give them plenty of fun.”
Well, didn't this last Test series between Australia and the West Indies keep you breathless right until the end? Let's hope we have that sort of cricket here this summer!

1961, Bobby Fischer Chess Champion; Chess is Game For The Young

The Guardian, London, Greater London, England, Wednesday, March 15, 1961 — Game For The Young — National Chess Week in Progress — Hundreds of young chess players are taking part in “National Chess Week,” which began on Sunday. It is organised by the British Chess Federation to publicise the game and win new members for its thousand-odd affiliated clubs.
Chess is a young man's game just now. The British champion, Jonathan Penrose, is 27; the world champion, Tal, is three years younger; the American champion, grandmaster Bobby Fischer, is not yet 18. In this country, chess owes must of its present strength to its enormous growth among school-children since the war. Many of them are among the teenagers who are playing “old stagers” in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Swansea, Sale and Worcester. The old stagers start at 20.

1961, Bobby Fischer and Samuel Reshevsky Chess Tournament Preparations by Alexander Bisno, Organizer

The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, California, Saturday, May 20, 1961 — Chess Match Funds Asked — Arrangements are being made for a chess match between Robert Fischer and Samuel Reshevsky. Fischer is the present U.S. champion and Reshevsky is the runner-up and former U.S. champion.
This match will be watched internationally, particularly in Russia, because Fischer is regarded as a real threat to the Russians, who have held the world championship since 1948.
The match calls for the playing of 16 games, four in New York, eight in Los Angeles and the last four in New York. The contestant who gets 8½ points or more will be declared the winner, a win counting for a full point and a draw counting for a half point.
It is necessary to raise a total of $7,000 to sponsor the match. New York has raised $3,000 and Los Angeles must raise $3,000 plus $1,000, the cost of transporting the two contestants from New York, where they live, to Los Angeles and return. Los Angeles has raised $2,000.
The American Chess Foundation, 1372 Broadway, New York, is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization. Hence, any one sending funds is entitled to tax exemption similar to that given to a charitable organization so designated by the Treasury Department.
Before the match can be publicized as official, we in California have to raise an additional $2,000. Mail checks to the foundation.—Alexander Bisno, Los Angeles.

Your ole McCarthyism working overtime there a bit? wasn't it, Mr. Sussman.

Bristol Herald Courier, Bristol, Tennessee, Monday, May 29, 1961

‘Walk For Peace’—A group of ‘Walk for Peace’ marchers crosses Columbus Circle at entrance to New York City's Central Park yesterday after hiking from San Francisco, where they started Dec. 1, 1960. The “peace walkers” will leave by plane for Europe where they will continue hike through London, Paris, Berlin and Warsaw en route to Moscow. They hope to arrive in the Soviet Capital in the fall.

Our Town by Barry Sussman
A picture on page two in today's Herald Courier shows a group of persons in New York, part way along in a protest march from San Francisco to Moscow. What they are protesting doesn't matter much here.
It happens that one of the marchers is a woman named Mrs. Regina Fischer. I saw her name among them in an earlier story, when the group was passing through Illinois.
Mrs. Fischer is a registered nurse from Brooklyn, N. Y. It happens that for a period of several weeks in 1957, I had steady contact with Mrs. Fischer, back in Brooklyn.
And it also happens that she is the mother of Bobby Fischer, the boy who was United States Chess Champion at 15 and recognized as an International Grand Master at 17.
Now whenever someone does something as extravagant as taking a year or so from her life just to walk—not even to climb a mountain—then she somehow impresses the world as, let's face it, an oddball, a crank, a food-faddist, the kind of persons George Orwell saw as forming the core of English Socialists. Someone, at any rate, who is not like you and me.
Well, Mrs. Fischer is not like you and me. When I met her, she had just applied for a developmental reading class sponsored by the Brooklyn Public Library. The purpose of the class varied according to the student's needs, but no class was suited to Mrs. Fischer's needs: she didn't need anything.
Test scores showed that she read at slightly under 1,000 words a minute, with almost total understanding. Her vocabulary left her falling over the percentile cliff—she was in the 99th percentile among college graduates, the highest score possible.
Oddly enough, she said she hadn't read at all in the past ten years, except for the morning papers. She read them in the subway, and not at all the way you and I would read if we were in the subway. She would stand up, strap-hanging, and look over the paper of someone sitting down. She read, then, upside down.
Mrs. Fischer said she wanted the class to get back in the swing of books, because she was about to take further college courses in nursing. She attended for awhile, then dropped out. That was the last I saw of her until the other day, in the picture.
Of course, whenever her son made news—and he has been written up in LIFE, THE NEW YORKER, PAGEANT, and repeatedly in the NEW YORK TIMES—I thought of his mother. When it was announced that a book reviewer paid $1,000 to send Bobby to Argentina for a chess competition because no fund existed to send the U.S. chess champion abroad and the family couldn't afford it, I thought of Mrs. Fischer, a quiet, calm genius taking another night course in nursing.
Mrs. Fischer didn't protest those days. If I didn't know the woman, her current protest march would leave me cold—I generally side with Orwell. I don't know why she is walking, maybe the subways having something to do with it, but Mrs. Fischer doesn't leave me cold. Unfortunately, I can't figure her out. All I can do is remind myself that she isn't like you and me.

1961, Ten Million Russian Chess Players

The Province, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Saturday, June 03, 1961

Ten million Russian chess players…
Why are Russians beating the world at chess? Is there an inherent Slav genius for the game, are the Russians more intellectual at games of strategy, or is it just the mathematical fact that there are more chess players in Russia than anywhere else?
A former British chess champion, C. H. O'D. Alexander, believes that the encouragement given in the USSR to chess players is the reason. Master players have considerable status. They can travel abroad. They are not seduced by the bridge players, as in other parts of Europe and North America. And there are ten million of them registered in clubs.
It was not always thus. In the last century the great matches were first Anglo-French. Then came the 21-year-old American from New Orleans, Paul Morphy, and later the German leaders Steinitz and Lasker held the championship for over 50 years. After that came Capablanca, the Cuban, and then Alekhine, a Russian.
Now Mikhail Botvinnik, at the age of 50, has defeated Mikhail Tal, aged 24. It is considered an imposing feat, and only one non-Russian, the American Bobby Fischer, is considered a possible rival.
But the remainder of the century, there is an ominous threat: Ernest Kim is growing up. Not too fast, it is hoped, for Kim at the age of five was the champion of Tashkent (in Ubekistan), a notable title. And at that age, Kim was described as “about the level of the average British championship player.”

Why Bobby Fischer Failed to Show Up For 1961 Fischer-Reshevsky Tournament.

⛔ A lot of false stories were published. This one stuck to facts. Fischer's refusal to play had much to do with being bullied by organizers, and the schedule changed without Fischer's consent to accommodate a referee's whims. It had nothing to do with Fischer resenting the wealth of Piatigorsky, nor the fact that she was a woman, nor did it have anything to do with her husband's Cello concert… many fables were published because chess journalists believe BS sells. This article was the only one, containing any factual confirmation by the organizers themselves. Why did the mainstream press make such pained concerted effort to cover up the fact that the organizers & referee Irving Rivise broke the rules? See L.A. Times, August 14, 1961 “Chess Champ Forfeits By Failing to Appear”

Oh, because Bobby Fischer was “just a kid.”

At noon, Bea, Erika, Franziska, Gerard, Jules, Lyn and Millie were taken to the reception House of Friendship. Mrs. Khrushchev shook hands with each and chatted warmly. Later they took seats around a long table and formal introductions were made.

'til the world understands why Robert J. Fischer criticised the U.S./British and Russian military industry imperial alliance and their own Israeli Apartheid. Sarah Wilkinson explains:

Bobby Fischer, First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
What a sad story Fischer was,” typed a racist, pro-imperialist colonial troll who supports mega-corporation entities over human rights, police state policies & white supremacy.
To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”. I think Mr. Fischer held out and fought the good fight, steadfast til the day he died, and may he Rest In Peace.

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.
